Travel - Brief History of Munich
Munich first began its transformation from countryside to city in the 7th century; Benedictine monks from Scotland and Ireland arrived and founded new monasteries. These monasteries have played an important part in the city’s rich history. Even the German name for Munich, “München” comes from the German word “Mönche” meaning “monks”. Monks can also be thanked for Munich’s rich beer tradition, as each monastery also housed a brewery.

Munich unfortunate ties with Adolf Hitler in the 1920s and 30s, resulted in the cities near destruction by allied bombings during World War II. Many historic buildings were demolished and around 200,000 inhabitants were killed. The city was soon rebuilt; however, the turning point in Munich’s modern history was the hosting of the 1972 Summer Olympics. In preparation for the games the subway system (U-Bahn) was built and continues to provide quick and easy transportation between all areas of the city.
